Just before trail 8 heads west into Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
the connector into Grand Marais heads north and then east along the Lake Superior shoreline
to the west side of town, shown right.
Be careful when coming into town and obey the speed laws and stop signs.
You are around cars and trucks in town. The night before I had I guy run through
two stop signs behind the Gas Station. Then he stopped the second time
in the middle of the road and looked back for his buddies. I seen him coming and stopped
about 10 feet from where he stopped. He sure was surprised to see 4 head lamps
and a grill instead of his buddies as he shot off the road.
There are a few places you can easily get to for a break and a bite.
Parking is no problem with plenty of room and a view of the bay.
Last summer I watched the
Sea Plane Rally
from my boat as they took off in the bay shown to the left.
In winter, after gassing up, of lot of sledders will stop for a break and enjoy the view.
After a good lunch I headed out trail 8 west past
Grand Sable Lake
where I stopped for a bit and watched the snow clouds move in and out.
About 10 inches had fallen since last night covering everything with a fresh
layer of white. I only saw one set of tracks across the lake and with about
4 foot of snow to get stuck in I could see why. Good advice, stay off the lakes you do
not know. They are never totally safe. But if you do, go like hell and never stop
until your off! The weight of all that snow pushes the ice down and the water up
making for a lot of slush.
