Moving on west down trail 8 I turned right at the 8-89 intersection
onto the lake shore route, trail 89. This trail was new since my last trip
around here in 2002 and I wanted to GPS it for my maps. The last time the road was not
groomed and with the huge moguls at the time I decided not to ride out to
the lake shore. One thing I really like is most all the trails in this area
are groomed roads. Nice and wide so you do not have to trim brush with your
right ski to stay on your side of the trail. The groomers do a nice job on these
roads and groom every night.
The first place I checked out was where the Hurricane River runs into
Lake Superior. With all the snow covering the shore the river cut a
tunnel under the snow pack and I gently walked over it to take the shot
above. I know it was dumb but I have been wet before
and carry extra clothes from socks up just in case. Also, I did want the shot.
A bit further trail 89 runs right along the Lake Superior shoreline
and Twelvemile Beach.
There was not enough sunlight today to get any good photos but the view was still awsome.
I recommend this trail to anyone with a camera!
Slowly I slid along the trail with visor up and a smile on my face. The traffic
was almost nil and the wide open trail and gently curving corners were
just to nice and easy on the body. I had Jimmy Hendrix playing Red House in
the helmet stereo and the blues beat just seem to fit the mood.
What a dance that was! Well tomorrow was going to be a long day with
U.P. 200 Sled Dog Championship coming through the area. I would be up
early and all day to find the racers out on the trail and get some photos.
I headed back to the cabin for dinner and a nights sleep.
