Behind the Community Building the parking lot was set up by the support
crews and volunteers to care for the dogs, sled and mushers as they pulled
in for a break from the trail. Areas were cut out of the deep snow to
provide wind breaks long enough for the team to line up in harness.
Straw was laid out over the snow to insulate the dogs and comfort their stay.
They were all feed and looked over by the owners for any problems or needs they
might have. Even their paws were rubbed with soothing oil before curling up for a nap.
You can tell these guys and gals really love their animals.
How could you not love them, all curled up with their
fellow sled dogs sharing heat and napping after a days work.
Each one reminding me of my old buddy sleeping back at the cabin and dreaming
of younger days. His feet just a going as he chases one of his foes
through the brush and fields of his dream.
I wandered around a while taking a few photos and watching the dogs being
quiet as I went. There were still many teams to check and what little
light there was had started to fade fast. The dogs slept, the officials
checked sleds and times, and I went inside for some hot coffee and a snack.
