It was a very busy night here in Grand Marais. Sled teams were checking in
as the early arrivals were getting ready to get back on the trail.
Even if the mushers weren't the sled dogs looked ready and eager!
You could just see the fire in their eyes as they waited to run.
24 hours on the trail with little break wears me out just thinking about it.
These little guys would be on the trail for two days, pulling!
A lot of the volunteers would also have a long weekend with very little sleep.
The check points along the trail stayed active day and night.
There was also one heck of a party out on the trail.
The last team left Grand Marais around 5 am Sunday morning but I packed it in
long before that. I hit the trail at sunup that Sunday as Slammer took one look at me
and rolled over as if to say your crazy.
Finally a clear day! The sky was a deep purple blue with
a fading moon still in the sky. I was hoping for a day like this
during the races to get some better photos but that's how it goes.
I rode around trail 8 and up to Woodland Park and noticed
plumes white against the blue horizon. All the holding pens
were being cleaned and the piles burned for sanitation.
They're still working.
