North Western U.P. Ride ~ 2003   By the Castmaster           Pg. 3

Our next stop was along the Sturgeon River where trail-8 & 15 run on Forest Rd. 2200 just north of the Sturgeon River Campground. We put our gloves and helmet liners under the hoods to dry and warm. They tend to get a little damp when you ride hard even at sub zero temps. Keep them dry and they will keep you warm. We then headed west on #8 into Sidnaw for gas and a warming late lunch. After a few cups of coffee and a few inflated stories we headed out over the Agate Falls Past Bruce Crossing and into the Western U.P. Trail System.

Trail 8 had been a little rocky in spots along the railroad grade from here back to Sidnaw, but now headed north again the snow pack was better and still coming down. The strong winds had blown the snow off the trail back on the long open stretches we now left behind. All day the snow had been falling and blowing around with the strong winds. According to the latest weather forecast we would be lucky to see 0 this trip. The weather was just right for the lake effect machine to stay fired up. I knew there would be tons of snow in the high country.

The rest of the trail leading into Bergland was in fine shape. It was nice to relax and one hand it for a while. The snow continued to fall as the sun slid in and out from behind the bands of snow clouds. We took East Shore Rd. south, where the trail turns north about a mile outside of Bergland, and on to Lake Gogebic facing a yellow sky and setting sun. A couple feet of fresh powder lay out over the lake inviting you to sit back on the seat and squeeze! Steve's 800 Polaris Long Track with the 1 1/2" paddles was made for this. You can see him racing the sunset in the photo to the right. We followed the GPS across the lake to the Walleye Lodge where Smitty had a room waiting for us. It was just about dark and we were beat!
