Grand Marais Trail Report:
DATE:   Tuesday, 2-9-10
BASE:   up to 6 inches
PAST 24 Hrs:   overcast
CONDITION:   fair to good
Not a whole lot happening in our neck of da woods UP here in Grand Marais during the past few days. Unfortunately, all of my friends in the Ohio River Valley got all of the snow that we usually get. My brother called me the other day in a panic along with another guy from Virginia to tell me how much snow they got. Two feet+ in a 24 hour period is a lot, especially if you're not prepared to handle it. I asked Chris if he could send some North of the Bridge. His response..."If I could, I would...gladly!" We'll take it. We may not be getting as much as they did, but the weather guru's are calling for a few inches tonight and a few inches more by Thursday this week. That doesn't include any LES that the big lake throws our way. Lord knows, we could use as much as Mother Nature can give us right now. Once you get out of town, the main trails above M-28 are holding up pretty well, thanks to the fact that the temps are staying in the 20's during the day & dropping into the teens at night. We've had a lot of traffic UP here this past weekend, so getting in & out of town without any fresh snow was pretty rough. The corners, especially west of town out along H-58 around Sable Lake and east near pull up hill were blown out. People just have to learn to slow it down out there....carbides can't grip icy pavement & before you have time to react, you're on the other side of the trail. Believe me, I know from experience. We had a couple of older guys ride in from the Soo & stay with us to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday. I always like to ask all of our guests who ride in from other places how the trails were & not to sugarcoat the answer. They said that they were in good shape overall. A few rough spots here & there & pretty much as I described above with the corners & in & out of towns. I got a couple of e-mails this morning asking about gas over toward Munising. As many of you know that have been UP here this season, unfortunately, there is no gas in Shingleton or Melstrand. The closest station near the Bear Trap is the BP in Wetmore. Sorry guys but it is what it is. Just like the weather. Ya just gotta make the best of it & remember, you're on vacation. "A rough day on the trails is still better than a good day at work." THERE'S STILL PLENTY OF GOOD SNOW OUT THERE! You just got to know where to find it, that's all. Get out on the groomed trails early in the morning after they've had the chance to set up overnight, hit the off trail 2 tracks in the afternoon & then party at night when you're done riding. THOSE ARE THE KEYS TO HAVING A GREAT WEEKEND, REGARDLESS OF CONDITIONS! Enjoy, be safe and please, don't drink or be under the influence when you ride. Thanks again for all of your support. We sincerely appreciate you & look forward to seeing you again soon! -John at Hilltop Cabins and the Beach Park Motel in Grand Marais (906) 494-2331 and (906) 494-2681
