Snowmobiling From The Cisco Chain of Lakes

Monday I stayed close to base an explored the channels and smaller lakes
in the Cisco Chain.
Most of the lake area had about two foot of powder
on top, smooth as silk and a joy to ride. A few others followed me up the
north channel
through Big Africa Lake and east through a small opening into
Record Lake.
The small island in Record lake had a nice 45° incline with tons of snow drifted
around making very nice landing areas for jumps. In the spring Osprey nest in
a tall dead tree on this island and the drop on the north shore is a great early walleye spot.
Things sure look different in the winters snow, but it's just as much fun to play in.
We spent the rest of the afternoon doing just that. Some back roads to the north also
made for some joyful powder play!
While running around Little Africa Lake I started up the stream that
heads to Clearwater Lake
and before I knew it open water! I darted off to the side and into a deep drift
filled with bushes that the skis were now stuck in. That's a big heavy sled and I was glad
Steve Cross was along. I first met Steve in Seney as a trail volunteer up for signing day.
He is up with a group from G.M. on his first trip to the western U.P.. With out his help I would still be waist deep in mud and snow. Next season I'm thinking
about an electric wench on the back of this sled! After getting the skis out and turned around
I bounced from bank to bank back out on to the lake. Despite the many 20° below nights there are
still areas not altogether solid. We made it back in time for dinner, stoked the fire,
and told lies most of the evening watching the flames flicker in and out. This was a real nice
cabin
for a group to relax in, even below zero and blowing on the lake out front.
