Start Your Engines!
It was Tuesday and the day before a group from Minnesota pulled in
with some fast sleds and a radar gun. Fred Jr. saw the cleared track
and was fired up. Set up for a quick ¼ mile it's all about hook-up.
Getting that power to the ice below, and hook up is something he and
his little Yamaha do very well, photo right. The top end is not great
but at the end of the ¼ he hits 100 mph on the radar! The fastest top end sleds were
hitting 107 mph but taking longer to get there. You could watch the egos play out
with Mr. End of Discussion, Radar.
The side by side racing was fun to watch. A little one on one argument settled
on the spot, no lies no denying. There was only one blown engine that day, who would of guessed?
One of the guys brought out a Blade
snowmobile which had a real radical suspension but was no faster than
the others. Everyone was in their element, the conversations were good, and
I learned a few things that day. One of which is most speedometers read 10 mph
faster than actual speed. I can tell this from watching the GPS also. Some of this
can be do to track slippage, but not all. To me 100 mph is still fast, I would not recommend this
other than on a cleared smooth track. A little fooling with the clutch springs and another
run down the track. The day ended with a lot of burnt fuel, what if stories,
and many good memories. From what I could tell all the manufactures were making good sleds, the riders
varied widely.
