Wednesday morning we woke up to a winter wonderland. About 16 inches of fresh snow covered the resort, so I knew up in the high country there would be twice this. After a quick breakfast we headed out to see how the sleds really handled. We headed east on trail 8 until we hit Peshekee Grade, a county road headed north along the Peshekee River. It was wide, unplowed, and covered with two foot of heaven! I was on the Arctic Cat 700 Snow-pro from Maple Bay Marine. It was light, agile, and had instant white-knuckle exceleration!

We danced from side to side, up and over drifts sliding around corners like a dirt track racer. Our first diversion was to Lake Arfelin down a narrow two track with about four foot of powder. We crept in slow and easy with no trouble. Both the Cat and the Ski-Doo's slid through the snow with ease. We raced across the lake painting the first lines on the virgin white canvas. Awesome was all I could think! Hopping back on the two tracks we worked our way north to trail 14 and took a break on Mt. Arvon, the highest point in Michigan. We took a few moments to brag about each others smooth moves over the past 50 miles of lakes, two tracks and trails. Headed into Big Bay for gas and a late lunch, we passed by the memorial for Duane Fish. We knew Duane; he took us on our first tour of the area a few years back. He was a good man. After lunch we took trail 5 south, pulled in about dusk, and rested up for another day.
