Now here's a place that brings out the kid in everyone. Bragging, racing, braking things, all the stuff childhood is made of but with bigger toys. Now I know I wasn't the fastest guy there so I kept quiet trying not to except any foolish challenges from the women who swore they could snuff me. I just wondered through the collection of antique sleds thinking to myself, I'm not that old. Alas, there were a lot of snowmobiles older than I, and for once someone was talking about things I couldn't remember. Thanks to the Antique Snowmobile Club of America there was quite a collection of beautifully reconditioned sleds on hand here. I was amazed at all the different designs in the early days of the machines.
After a bit the owners started a few of the old machines and drove around the parking lot a bit. The yellow one, above left, went through the snow banks like an old tank with its wooden tracks. You would sit on the sled pulled behind and turn the engine with the handle bars. Just like some old lawn tractor. It must have been the front wheel traction they were after.
After watching the show for a while the clubhouse started to sound good. Some coffee and a snack by an open fire helped to refresh my attitude. It is a very nice cafeteria setting with a large round fire pit in the center to warm up to. I hear they have a fine breakfast here every Sunday morning.
After being warmed to the bone it was time to take a look at the racers. Any one can pay the small fee and run their sleds down the track. Its a safe way to see how fast you really are. Also it's a lot of fun for the spectators who can get a real good view of the track start to finish. The few photos below will give you a small hint of the action.
